Meet Your Executive Function Coach

Hi, I’m Catriona. I help teens develop their executive function skills, so they overcome their biggest school struggles and feel empowered.

With over 36 years of experience as an educator and as a stepmother to a neurodiverse young adult, I’ve worked with many teens who, like yours, have immense potential but struggle with tasks like organization, completing work, and staying focused—skills that are key to success in school and life.

I know how tough it can be when a lack of executive function skills leaves your teen feeling anxious or unmotivated. These challenges often spill over into home life, making it harder for you to support them.

Through personalized, compassionate coaching, I help teens build the executive function skills they need to thrive. Imagine having a partner who understands and has proven strategies to help your teen gain confidence, overcome obstacles, and navigate school with more ease.

Together, we can unlock your teen’s potential and make school more manageable for both of you.

FAQ

Your questions, answered

  • What is executive function coaching?
Executive function coaching is the art and science of guiding learners to strengthen their ability to get the things they need to do (and want to do) done. Executive function coaching builds individuals’ capacity to become more confident, strategic, self-aware, and independent learners.
  • My teen is neurodiverse. Will executive function coaching help them?
Teens and young adults who have neurological conditions or mental health challenges often experience executive dysfunction. Research shows that the executive function development of neurodiverse individuals, lags 2-3 years behind typical peers, which significantly impacts their academic, social, and/or behavioural experiences. Executive function coaching is an important and much needed resource and support system for these individuals and their families.
  • How do executive function coaches differ from tutors?
Instead of focusing on content, executive function coaches empower individuals to work through their current challenges of school (and life) by practising new strategies and tools so they reach their goals. For example, creating a weekly schedule to balance school demands with work and friends. Executive function coaches guide and encourage the development of these new habits, inspiring confidence and reducing overwhelm.
  • Would my teen benefit from executive function coaching?
While any teen would benefit from executive function coaching, it is essential for students in middle school, high school, and university who are struggling to keep up with educational expectations, societal demands, distractions from technology, and peer pressure while experiencing significant psychological and physiological growth. Executive function coaching helps teens learn necessary skills to navigate these pressures with more competence, confidence and ease.
  • Can parents be their teen’s executive function coach?
As a parent, you control many aspects of your teen’s life—where they live, what they eat, curfews etc. As teenagers and young adults strive for autonomy and agency, an unequal power dynamic can develop. This can make your teen sensitive to your feedback, more argumentative, and less willing to work with you. Having an objective professional to help them manage the challenges of school, can free up space for you to focus on rebuilding a healthy dynamic and relationship with your teen.
  • How can I support my teen’s executive function skills at home?
If you’d like to work with your teen to build their executive function skills and capacities at home, consider signing up for the DIY Package that includes an online executive function assessment and 1:1 strategy session with me. This will help you understand your teen’s executive function strengths and weaknesses and select suitable goals and strategies.

Thank you for showing me what it’s like to have courage for public speaking and teaching me that you have confidence within yourself. Also, thanks for showing me that you will have failures in your life, but with these failures come improvements. When you work on the things you can improve on, success will come your way. Ms. M. you showed me what it’s like to be calm, to show respect, have patience, compassion, tranquility, courage, and be hardworking.
